"ropetakes" is both a take on rope as an aesthetically pleasing material and simultaneously asking the question where does aesthetics end and sexuality start? By western norms, Shibari is equally an art form and an expression of sexuality but Shibari follows certain rules to be defined as such. What if we break those rules and simply portrait rope similar to but not conforming to any bondage techniques? Is it still sexual? Why are we as viewers in such a need to compartmentalize the meaning of images almost immediately?
